YOU WHEN WE GET ANY NEWS ABOUT THIS ATTACK. WELL, TONIGHT THERE’S SOME NEW VIDEO THAT SHOWS THE MOMENTS THAT A MAN OPENED FIRE ON A CHP OFFICER RIGHT ALONG A BUSY INTERSTATE FIVE. NOW IT SHOWS JUST HOW DANGEROUS TRAFFIC STOPS CAN BE AND HOW QUICKLY OFFICERS NEED TO REACT. KEEP YOUR HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM. DO NOT REACH THAT GUY. REQUESTING BRAKES. REQUESTING BRAKE. LIVERMORE. WELL, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE’RE SEEING HOW THIS SHOOTING FROM LAST OCTOBER UNFOLDED IN VIDEOS OBTAINED BY KCRA THREE INVESTIGATES, A WARNING HERE. IT MAY BE HARD FOR SOME TO WATCH. BRANDI CUMMINGS TAKES US THROUGH WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. OCTOBER 15TH, 2023,. 11:37 A.M. I’M GOING TO BE OUT WITH A WHITE HONDA SOUTHBOUND, A CHP OFFICER PULLS UP BEHIND A CAR ON THE SHOULDER. THE REPORT, A DISABLED MOTORIST. HEY, CAN YOU ROLL DOWN YOUR WINDOW? BUT THE MAN INSIDE REFUSES. THE OFFICER SLOWLY WALKS BACK TO HIS PATROL CAR, KEEPING THE CAR AND THE PERSON INSIDE IN CLEAR VIEW. AT THE SAME TIME, THE DRIVER GETS OUT. HEY, STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE! HEY, HEY, WE’RE PAUSING THE VIDEO HERE BECAUSE OF ITS GRAPHIC NATURE, BUT YOU CAN. STILL HEAR WHAT HAPPENED. 802802 SHOTS FIRED, SHOTS FIRED, SHOTS FIRED. IT ALL HAPPENED FAST. THIS WAS JUST ONE MINUTE AFTER THE OFFICER STOPPED. YOU KNOW, HE’S GOT AN AR. IT’S UNDERNEATH HIM ON HIS LENGTH. KEEP YOUR HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM. DO YOU NOT REACH FOR THAT GUN? STOP MOVING. THEN AT 1140 THREE MINUTES AFTER THE OFFICER STOPPED ANOTHER SHOOTOUT ALONG THE BUSY INTERSTATE. STAY ON THE GROUND HERE ON THE GROUND. COULD NOT DO IT. ARE THEN THE MAN IDENTIFIED AS JOSEPH MICHAEL PATE, GETS UP, CONTINUING TO SHOOT AT THE OFFICER. HE TAKES OFF IN THE PATROL CAR. WE’VE SPED UP THE VIDEO, BUT YOU CAN SEE HIM SWERVING IN AND OUT OF TRAFFIC, GOING AT SOME POINTS UP TO 107 MILES AN HOUR. THEN FOUR MINUTES AFTER TAKING THE PATROL CAR, PATE VEERS OVER IN FRONT OF AN 18 WHEELER, CAUSING IT TO FLIP ON ITS SIDE. THE PATROL CAR GOES INTO AN OPEN FIELD AND CATCHES FIRE. PATE MANAGES TO GET OUT ON HIS OWN AND WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. THIS BODY CAMERA VIDEO FROM ONE OF THE RESPONDING OFFICERS SHOWS THE BURNING PATROL CAR AND THE THICK BLACK SMOKE AS PARAMEDICS ASSESS. PATE THEN TAKEN HIM TO THE HOSPITAL, WHERE HE LATER DIED. THIS CHP CHOPPER VIDEO AFTER THE INCIDENT SHOWS THE YELLOW EVIDENCE MARKERS AND HOW DANGEROUSLY CLOSE THOSE GUNSHOTS CAME TO OTHER. DRIVERS. Newly released video of a California Highway Patrol traffic stop shows how dangerously close drivers on Interstate 5 in Tehama County came to being injured by gunshots.The video provided exclusively to KCRA shows the stop, which happened on Oct. 15, 2023. According to a report from CHP, the incident started when a CHP officer went to check on what he thought was a disabled vehicle. The white Honda was parked on the shoulder of I-5. It had dark tint on the windows and a sunshade covering the front windshield.Dash camera video from the officer’s patrol car shows the 10-year veteran officer approach the vehicle on the passenger side. “Hey, can you roll down your window?” the officer is heard saying to the man inside the vehicle. However, the driver refused to roll down the window. He gets out of the vehicle instead and shoots the officer. The ordeal happened quickly. The officer was shot at just one minute after the officer stopped to check on the driver. Then two minutes later, the suspect begins shooting at the officer again, striking him, before stealing the patrol car. Newly released video of a California Highway Patrol traffic stop shows how dangerously close drivers on Interstate 5 in Tehama County came to being injured by gunshots.

The video provided exclusively to KCRA shows the stop, which happened on Oct. 15, 2023.

According to a report from CHP, the incident started when a CHP officer went to check on what he thought was a disabled vehicle.

The white Honda was parked on the shoulder of I-5.

It had dark tint on the windows and a sunshade covering the front windshield.

Dash camera video from the officer’s patrol car shows the 10-year veteran officer approach the vehicle on the passenger side.

“Hey, can you roll down your window?” the officer is heard saying to the man inside the vehicle.

However, the driver refused to roll down the window. He gets out of the vehicle instead and shoots the officer.
